Driving Lessons

You can usually choose how long each of your lessons last. Two hour lessons are most common. It's worth thinking about what will suit you best before booking any lessons. Three hour lessons are popular with those that live outside of the area where they plan to take their test.

For those who are really impatient to pass the driving test, an intensive driving course may be the answer.

How Long Should Driving Lessons Be?

There is no perfect lesson size - what matters is what's right for you. You need to think about the following:

  • How much time you have available
  • How much you can afford to pay per week
  • Whether you live in the town where you will take your test
  • How much stamina you have
  • Whether you have a deadline to work to

Here are some thoughts that might be relevant to you:

  • If you live 25 minutes out of town, and you want to be collected from and brought back home, you will get a maximum of 70 minutes driving in a two hour lesson. Is that enough for you? A three hour lesson might be more useful, particularly when you consider the greater types of road conditions you may encounter on the new test. Or you could meet the instructor in town and keep your lessons to one or two hours.
  • Providing the lesson is stimulating and enjoyable, you may achieve more in a two hour lesson than in two one hour lessons. Because of the continuity, there may be less time used up in planning and reviewing the lesson topics, and therefore more time is available to practice new topics.
  • Please note that some driving schools run 50 minute lessons - take this into account when comparing lesson prices.
